Kuala Lumpur
City Color:WHITE

Kuala Lumpur embraces cultural diversity, from food to religion. During this cultural exploration, I discovered that all three major ethnic groups share legends of "white blood": in Indian tradition, white blood symbolizes holiness and purity; the Malay princess Mahsuri proved her innocence through white blood; and the Chinese Kapitan Seng Ming Li became a deity through it. These stories led me to choose white as the color of Kuala Lumpur—it is blood, it is light, it is the beginning of a story. Pure yet fractured, faint yet impossible to ignore. Using documentary photographs taken during my residency, I composed them in layouts inspired by comic strips and rendered them through silkscreen printing. The assembled urban landscapes were printed onto blocks made of vertical color stripes. Green, red, and purple represent the “red envelopes” used by Malays, Chinese, and Indians—originally a Chinese custom that evolved into a shared practice through cultural exchange. Light blue is derived from the tableware commonly used in local pasar (food markets), yellow carries meanings of dignity across all three communities, while black and brown evoke a sense of seriousness and gravity.
